A considered retreat in the calmer half of Bali

Bali Utara sits on the northern side of the island's central spine, in a part of Bali that most visitors bypass entirely on their way south. The coordinates place you within easy reach of Singaraja — Bali's second-largest city and its former Dutch colonial capital — while the surrounding landscape shifts between irrigated rice terraces, black-sand shoreline, and the lower slopes of Gunung Agung's volcanic range. This is a different Bali from Seminyak or Ubud: quieter roads, fewer tour buses, and a local pace of life that reasserts itself quickly.

The property is sized deliberately for two guests. Rather than scaling up square footage, the design focuses on getting the details right — the quality of light in the morning, the airflow through the main living space, the materials underfoot and overhead. Locally sourced volcanic stone appears in the flooring and feature walls, while the structural timber is Javanese teak, chosen for its density and its resistance to the humidity that characterises Bali's northern microclimate year-round.

The neighbourhood around the property rewards slow exploration. Local warungs serving Balinese babi guling and lawar are within a short drive, and the weekly market at Singaraja brings producers from across the regency. The Bali Utara coastline — technically Buleleng Regency — offers snorkelling at Lovina's calm bay and dolphin watching at dawn without the crowds that gather further south. Temple ceremonies are frequent and genuinely local in character.

Practically, the property works well as a base for longer stays. The GPS coordinates place you within forty minutes of Bedugul's highland lakes, an hour from the Gitgit waterfall trail, and roughly ninety minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport via the trans-island expressway. Fast broadband is installed and reliable, making remote work a realistic option for guests who want to extend their time here.

What a stay here actually feels like

You arrive in the late afternoon, when the northern light turns the volcanic stone walls amber and the air carries a faint salt edge from the Bali Sea a few kilometres north. The check-in is straightforward — no lobby, no queue, just a code and a short message from the host. You drop your bags, open the louvred panels that face the garden, and for a moment simply stand there while the ceiling fan turns slowly overhead.

Mornings here begin before the heat builds. You make coffee in the kitchen and drink it outside while the street below starts its slow assembly — a temple offering placed at the gate, a motor scooter carrying a pyramid of fruit, the distant chant from a pura you will pass later on foot. Breakfast from the nearest warung costs almost nothing and arrives on a banana leaf. There is no pressure to be anywhere.

In the afternoon you might drive the coastal road west toward Lovina, where the black sand beach is largely empty on weekdays and the snorkelling reef sits close enough to reach without a boat. Alternatively, the road east takes you through clove and cocoa plantations toward Amed, one of Bali's best shore-dive sites. The property has enough covered outdoor space to spend an entire afternoon reading without going anywhere at all, which is also a legitimate choice.

Evenings in North Bali tend to be sociable in a low-key way. The local night market near Singaraja's old port fills with families from around seven onwards, and the seafood grilled on-site is as good as anything you will eat on the island. Back at the property, the temperature drops ten degrees from the daytime peak, the ceiling fan is sufficient without air conditioning, and sleep comes without effort.

Bali's former colonial capital retains Dutch-era warehouses and a harbour-side night market that draws locals every evening from around seven.

Gitgit Waterfall

35 minutes by car

A series of falls dropping through dense jungle at roughly 900 metres elevation, reached by a well-maintained path through coffee and clove groves.

Bedugul Lake Beratan

Bedugul Lake Beratan

55 minutes by car

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan sits on the edge of a crater lake at 1200 metres, cooler and less visited on weekday mornings than its photographs suggest.

Why North Bali Rewards the Unhurried Traveller

The road between Singaraja and Lovina runs alongside a coastline most visitors never see. Here is what happens when you slow down enough to actually notice it — the fishing boats, the empty reef, the warung with no English menu.

A Dawn Dolphin Trip from Lovina Beach

The boats leave before sunrise, which means waking up in the dark and being on the water while the sky is still purple. The dolphins are not guaranteed, but the light on the Bali Sea at that hour makes the early alarm worthwhile regardless.

The Singaraja Market and What to Buy There

Singaraja's covered market runs every day but comes alive on Saturday mornings when producers arrive from across Buleleng Regency. Salak fruit, local palm sugar, hand-woven endek cloth, and a coffee stall that has been in the same spot for decades.
